Bangin’ bangs!

First of all, saying there is a new ‘trend’ in hair and hairstyles is a big NO. Your hair is not something that should be subordinated by a new trend. It’s not like you can cut your hair into a bob and a week later change it to long and luscious waves. It’s not a newly bought 70’s inspired skirt (Oh so hot right now) that you’re probably going to wear once or twice and, in a month, forget you even own such a thing. You can if you’re Beyonce, but let’s face it, you’re not. Once you cut it, it will be difficult to grow it back out. Needless to say it takes a long time. That’s why hair shouldn’t be categorized as a trend. I’m all for trying different styles but not according to trends.

Now that I’ve shared my personal opinion with you, we can talk business. Business in a from of a fringe cut. Bangs are hot (if done right). Some of the sexiest women alive had fringe as their signature style. Case in point: Jane Birkin, Anna Karina, Brigitte Bardot and Jean Shrimpton. In newer and more modern times there are Freja Beha Erichsen, Caroline de Maigret and Alexa Chung. All of them are the ultimate It girls and tomboyish style icons. The fringe is what makes them look effortlessly cool and nonchalant. With the 70’s clothing trend going strong this season, the appeal of fringe is impossible to deny but the allure of the perfect set is timeless.

The beauty of this styling lies in effortlessness and simplicity but also in the fact that it looks good on blondes, brunettes and redheads. Works on coal black hair like Patti Smith’s as well as on gingers, natural or not. The emphasis is on the natural texture of your hair left on air to dry with minimum styling products. Even looks better when worn messy, gives you that dose of rock’n’roll chic. The edges of the bangs that reach up to the eyebrows should be slightly longer in order to achieve a smooth transition and subtly frame the face. What you don’t want to achieve is a straight cut that makes the face look too rectangular and strict. Keep in mind that these bangs are best suited to the oval shape of the face.

So if you’re in need of a change, take a cue from these style icons and their bangin’ bangs, consult with your hairdresser and go for it!
