China: Through the looking glass – The Met Gala Verdict

The most important fashion night has finally come – The Costume Institute Gala. It is a major fundraising benefit that serves as an opening celebration for the Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Following the event, the exhibition runs for several months. Under the direction of the one and only Anna Wintour (Vogue editor-in-chief and a chair of the event since 1995), each year the annual guest list, which includes only 650 – 700 people, manages to raise millions of dollars, with the biggest amount being 12 million in 2014. No wonder why! The ticket price since 2014 goes for 25,000 dollars. Not the smallest amount to pay for an exclusive event. Each year the event has a theme, and includes a cocktail hour and a formal dinner. This year the theme was China: Through the looking glass. Everyone expected a lot of kimonos and geisha-like looks but the guests underperformed. The theme in the dresses was not obvious enough and seems like there was an unwritten rule “The more embellished the better” to which the female attendees tried to stick to. It only made them look tacky which is not a term usually connected with the Met Gala. But, some of them did not disappoint after all.

Plain tacky and over the top. Only Cher in 1974 could have pulled this off and the look should have stayed there.

  2. I wish people had been able to pull off the “theme” a little better- as some of the looks were a little too “safe” for the Met Gala, in my opinion- but I definitely agree with all of your picks!

  3. I disagree. Beyoncé wasn’t my favorite but she isn’t on the worst list and Kim Kardashian looked amazing.
